Have you seen a theme here? I've been practicing putting a lot.
I started this morning with a gym workout, a simply 30 minute routine focused on improving the strength in my lower body and turn through the swing.
First was 3 sets of 12 curls with the 40lb curl bar to get warmed up. I then moved into doing elastic rope swings with the cable towers. I did sets of 12 on each side with 40lbs of resistance, both in downward and upward motions.
I then proceeded to do Russian twists with a 10lb medicine ball, 3 sets of 20 on each side. Then I did the ropes, 3 sets in a sumo squat for 1 minute each, and I finished with reverse pull-ups, 3 sets of 15. All in all it took around 30 minutes, and then it was off to the course!
I continued practicing putting, working to groove a consistent putting stroke that I can really rely on under pressure.
The idea behind these tools is it forces you to have a straight backstroke and follow through, and the straight string allows you to see the ball as it is rolling to know if you have a tendency to pull or push putts.
To better demonstrate, see this video I recorded while practicing (it is harder than you would think!):
I did this for almost an hour straight. The key to making this work well is to find a fairly straight putt and then line it up correctly with the EyeLine Putting Mirror. Then take the Straight String and place it about a foot past the hole and then a couple of feet on the other side of the mirror.
When I first started, I immediately noticed my tendency to pull putts. Once I got that corrected, I started sinking more and more putts and feeling more confident about my stroke (the putt was about 10ft). It was a very helpful exercise and I plan to practice it at least once a week now to continue to hone and refine that stroke.
Once I completed putting, I then went to the range to practice some wedge shots with my 60, 56 and 52 degree Vokey SM6 wedges and my AP2 pitching wedge, practicing various shots as if I was in trouble. It was a good exercise to try and improve shot shaping from unpredictable lies on the course.
All in all, it was a good day of practice and wrapped up a solid week. I'm excited about getting to play again soon to see how all of the practice will benefit me on on the course!
